[Mars] Humanity a Chick

About the exhaustion of ressources: even though it would be dereasonnable to take it for granted without further inquiry, would it be possible to compare the ressources of Earth to the ultra-rich environment provided by the egg to the yet-to-be chick? Then humanity should not aim for a "limited development" but rather for "breaking the shell" and get out of it, as for instance by colonizing the moon and Mars...
